Coaches Corner

If you've been a coach for years, or you're getting ready for your first year of coaching, here's some great ideas for you to use with your squad.

Like most schools, we have a night set aside every year to honor our seniors. It's always our last home game. We try to make this a special night for the seniors and their families. Here's some ideas for you to use.

We recently had our senior night for the class of 2004. We recognized our boys basketball, swimming, and cheerleading teams. It was a really memorable night thanks to a bunch of parents, friends, our high school principal and our athletic director. We have tons of pictures for you and a lot of great ideas you can use for your senior night.

Every year for senior night, we put posters up for each senior athlete in front of the gym. Usually most schools just use a basketball and a megaphone. We wanted to do something different. We decided to make posters that looked like the uniforms. They looked amazing when we were finished!

Everyone loves our posters that we make for senior night. This year we added a new design for our team manager.

We took a lot of pictures of our seniors on senior night. Many of our parents have asked to see them. We thought it might be nice to put all of them on our web site for the family and friends of our seniors to see. We will continue to add new photos as we get copies of every one's pictures. There are a lot of pictures, so it might take a while to load!

We wanted to make an ornament that would remind the girls of the real reason for Christmas. We have step by step directions so you can make these in your school colors for your squad.

For the holiday season two of our cheer moms got together and made these cute ornaments. They had leaves with the bible verse Galatians 5:22, "But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." printed on them along with the girls name and the year. Every year, the girls can put these on their Christmas tree and be reminded of this year.

We have another winter craft that uses old tennis balls. We've turned them into little snowmen ornaments. They can be easily personalized for each player or cheerleader. And just like the Halloween pumpkins you can cut a hole in the back and fill them with candy.

Last week our squad wanted to learn another cheer for our home game. We didn't have time to learn a completely new one. We took an old cheer and added a unique beginning to it. Instead of having all 19 girls start out spread across the gym, we started down on our knees in a small circle/bunch. During the first few motions we moved to our spread-out formation.

If you want to improve your jumps then you need to practice them every day. Practicing our jumps always helps us increase our height on jumps. It also helps us improve our timing. We always get a lot of great comments about how high and together our jumps are.

We wanted to do something special for our basketball team parents, so we decided they might like a decal with their son's name & number, and the new mascot on it. While we were making these, we decided we'd make decals for all of our cheerleaders too.

For Christmas two of our cheer moms got together to give us these cute little snowmen ornaments. On the snowman there was a bible verse that went with the theme of the gift. We used Psalm 51:6-7, "Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow."

When we competed in the Eureka competition, two of our cheer moms made these gifts for us. This verse was attached to each angel: "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." --- Isaiah 40:31. They wanted to remind us that God would be with us. We felt He was with us, because we took home the 3rd place trophy.

Around Easter time, Mrs. Perron was still thinking of all of us. She gave us this cute little bunny with this note in our lockers for a sweet surprise.

At our end of the year cheerleading party, Mrs. Perron gave us our school letters and athletic awards. The neatest thing was the minature trophies made to look like the first place trophy we won from our Eureka competition. It was very thoughtful and something we can all keep to remember our great year of cheering.

Once our cheerleading season ended, Mrs. Perron put neat candy roses in our lockers with a special note; "It's been fun watching you grow." It was so sweet, and has made me really appreciate this year of cheering.

Mrs. Perron always thinks of others. During our middle school's Regional Tournament, she had a basket set out that was full of toiletries for the visiting cheerleaders to use.

At the Tri-County tournament, our Varsity cheerleaders worked very hard because there was a cheerleading competition during the game. They were discouraged because they thought they didn't do very well. Mrs. Perron put the fans and the note in their lockers to let them know she was her biggest fan.

Mrs. Perron made a wonderful Cheer Consitution for us that she gave to us before tryouts. This is so that we are familiar with her rules and what she's going to want out of us a cheerleaders. That way, there won't be any suprises or disagreements with her rules in the middle of the year. It is very detailed and if your squad needs a constitution, you can use this to get a general idea of what you want to put on yours.

One of the requirements for cheerleading tryouts at our school is that we have to make a poster for one of the games. This is a really good idea, because we don't have to worry about making them before each game. Mrs. Perron laminates most of these after she gets them, and then she can reuse them each year. She has a huge collection of posters now, from previous years of coaching, so decorating the hallways is a much easier task. We have a lot of our more unique posters on our Posters page.

At one of our practices, Mrs Perron gave us some star-shaped slinkys. The point is that together we can be a superstar squad, but when one of us are missing, we can't work. She did this becasue we've been having problems with people missing practices, and she's showing how it hurts the whole squad to not have everybody there. Anyways, I thought it meant a lot. (It glows in the dark too!)

The night before we competed, we were very nervous, so Mrs. Perron gave us uplifting notebooks to inspire us. She reminded us that it didn't matter if we got first, just that we would do our best for God. (I still have mine on my desk to remind me to try my best in everything)

With Christmas coming, Mrs. Perron has been doing a lot for us as a squad, and she put in our locker a small snowglobe/flashlight. The Bible verse she left with it was Matthew 5:16, "...let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."

One of the things Mrs. Perron does for senior night is make a poster for all the seniors. These are put on a wall in the front hall way, and they are great for the seniors to keep.
