![]() Road Sign Locker Decoration ![]() At our school we take turns decorating the lockers. When it was my turn, I had to decorate for a big tournament. I did not want to do the usual "cutesy" stuff, but instead wanted something that was more masculine. These turned out great and the guys loved them. I then made similar decorations for the girls, but with cheerleading silhouettes. I measured the lockers and then cut strips of paper to completely cover each door. I used red for the girls and black for the boys. I added 3 inches on each end so I could wrap the paper over and under the locker door. I found the paper stays on better and looks nicer if you do this. I cut an opening the exact size of the handle and lock. I turned my paper over and reinforced the back with clear box tape. You can use any kind of tape for this. I used this kind because it was all I had on hand. I think masking tape is probably the easiest to use. When you first start this step you might want to use 6 or 7 inch strips of tape until you get used to applying it I put a lot of extra tape around the cutout for the door handle and lock because I knew it would get a lot of wear. I printed out my "Road Sign" poster (You can find these here). I used card stock for this because it is sturdier and looks nicer when glued on. I made sure to print the lockers signs small enough to fit at least 10 on each locker. I added their names and numbers to one of the road signs. For the girls I added several road signs with cheer silhouettes on then. After I cut each sign out I laid them on the red paper. I moved them around several times and finally found an arrangement I was happy with. I wanted to sponge paint a few words on each one. Before I did this I laid the sponges on the paper and moved these around until I was happy with their placement. A lot of the cheerleaders have lockers right next to the basketball players so I wanted to make sure they would look nice next to each other. Before I glued anything to the girl's decoration I went ahead and made the boys. I laid it on the floor next to one of the girls. I wanted to make sure I liked how they looked next to each other. I did the sponge painting next. I wanted to use stop light colors so I bought red, yellow and green craft paint. I only used a small amount of paint in my bowl because this keeps the sponge from getting too full of paint. I used green near the top of each decoration. I did not draw a line to print on, but instead laid a ruler on the paper and used it as my guide. I printed the girl's names in the same color and same location on their decoration. I used the yellow paint in the middle of the players and cheerleaders locker decorations to spell out the word "Caution". Once again I used a ruler as my guide. I used red for "Danger" on the boy's locker. The red did not show up on the girl's paper so I used black paint instead. I had a few problems getting the cardstock to stick to the black wrapping paper. It was so shiny that craft glue would pop off of it when it dried. I ended up having to use a hot glue gun for this. I had to put a ton of glue on each sign. If I did not glue all around the edges the signs still wanted to pop off when the glue was dry. The red paper was from a big jumbo roll our school has for bulletin boards. Any glue or tape would have stuck to it, but I went ahead and used my glue gun. We always try to match the guys candy with the locker decoration theme. Since it was close to Valentine's Day, I had planned on buying foil covered chocolate that was shaped like a stop sign. These are usually easy to find in January, but I couldn't find them. So I bought giant "Hershey" bars and made new wrappers for them. This was a lot easier to make than I thought it would be. All I did was find two signs that were close in size to the shape of the candy. I enlarged them and printed them out on orange and white card stock. The foil sticks out of the paper wrapper on each end of the candy bar. I trimmed each cardstock sign so the foil would still show on each end of the candy bar. I laid the foil wrapped candy on top of the paper and then folded the paper around it. I used scotch tape to secure it. We put one of these in each guy's locker and they loved them. We also printed out the matching road sign posters, had them laminated and taped them to the walls above the lockers. For more cheerleading info, visit PCS Cheerleading Website
